Here are some of the instruments and traditions of Palawa’an and mastered by Masino Intaray:

 

Tutul

  • Tultul is an epic chant practiced in the highland of Palawan. This epic chant is a long narrative using mythological elements mirrors everyday life and explains the occurrence of natural and spiritual events.

  • It is to be possessed by a Täw Tultultulän.  These epic heroes are mortal man protects the “real man”. They lived between space and meddle in the human world and Ämpug. It is essential that the bard can interpret this relationship because he will become the medium of Täw Tultultulän.  They say, Tultul is linked to the sacred world and only allowed to be sung during the night or daybreak.

BABAK

  • The other term for Babak is suling. It is a ring flute made out of tamiang bamboo, has small holes with a circling thin band of rattan. It has two types: five finger-holes and four finger-holes. Their difference is that the five-finger holes have a pelog system while the four finger-holes have a slendro system.
